How IP Geolocation Works — Accuracy, Limits & Privacy Reality

The Basics

Every device on the internet has an IP address. RIRs (regional registries) assign IP blocks to ISPs, who register rough locations. Geolocation databases (MaxMind, IP2Location) aggregate this registry data plus BGP routing info and ISP-submitted corrections.

What a Site Actually Sees

Try our IP Lookup tool on your own IP. You'll get: country, city (ISP-level), ISP name, ASN, timezone. Not your street address — that requires a legal subpoena to the ISP.

VPNs and Latency

A VPN shows the VPN exit node's location. Combining IP location with browser timezone, language, and WebRTC leaks can still identify mismatches — which is why streaming services detect VPNs reliably.

FAQ

Why does VPN show the wrong city?

Databases map the VPN datacenter's registered location, which is often wherever the hosting company filed paperwork.

Can someone find my home from my IP?

No — private users map only to the ISP's city-level hub. Law enforcement can compel ISPs for subscriber records, but public tools can't.
